Cabinet clears Rs 10,783 crore railway multi-tracking projects across five states
The projects will add 656 km of track and are expected to improve connectivity for 4,790 villages, the government said.
- On Wednesday, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs , chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved railway multi-tracking projects aimed at expanding capacity across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
- Planned under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, these initiatives continue a 12-year modernization drive by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to quadruple seven high-density corridors handling around 40% of rail traffic.
- Clearing investments of Rs 10,783 crore and Rs 10,021 crore, the government will add about 540 Kms to the network across 17 districts to ease congestion on key passenger and freight corridors.
- Capacity expansion will facilitate additional freight traffic of 27 MTPA, lowering logistics costs while improving connectivity to regional tourist and religious destinations including Tirupati and Kodaikanal Hills.
- Detailed Project Reports are currently being prepared for nearly 4,000 km of the remaining network, complementing 5,000 km of projects either underway or already approved across the seven corridors.
