Cabinet clears ₹28,840 crore for regional connectivity scheme revamp, ₹1,800 crore to upgrade immigration system

The Rs 28,840 crore scheme extends subsidies to five years and plans to develop 100 airports and 200 helipads to improve connectivity in remote and tiered regions.

  • On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the Modified UDAN scheme with a total outlay of ₹28,840 crore, to be distributed over ten years from FY 2026-27 to FY 2035-36.
  • Data presented in Parliament revealed that 327 of 663 routes launched since 2017 were discontinued, with a Comptroller and Auditor General report finding only 7% to 10% remained viable beyond the subsidy period.
  • The government allocated ₹12,159 crore to redevelop 100 airports from unused airstrips, alongside ₹3,661 crore for 200 helipads and ₹2,577 crore for maintenance of 441 aerodromes.
  • Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the subsidy period for Tier-2 and Tier-3 routes extended from three to five years, with funding shifted from airfare levies to direct exchequer support.
  • This expansion aligns with the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, positioning the Modified UDAN scheme to transform India into a globally competitive aviation ecosystem by enhancing connectivity for underserved areas and common citizens.
