- On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet approved a Rs. 9,585 crore scheme to replace old trucks and buses in the Delhi-NCR region to curb air pollution.
- The transport sector contributes 63% of Nitrogen Oxide and 40% of Carbon Monoxide emissions in Delhi-NCR, with a single Pre-BS heavy-duty vehicle emitting pollution equivalent to 14 BS-VI-compliant vehicles.
- Targeting 1.91 lakh trucks and 16,329 buses, the scheme is funded by the National Capital Region Planning Board under MoHUA and implemented by MoRTH and MoPNG across participating states.
- The Central Government will offer 5 per cent interest subvention on loans and monthly fuel vouchers, while Participating Auto OEMs provide 8% discounts on ex-showroom prices for new vehicles.
- Implementation will be fully digital through an integrated portal enabling real-time eligibility checks and automated claims, with benefits continuing for 5 years from vehicle registration to ensure sustained pollution reduction.
