Pentagon says the firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan will be livestreamed
- Acting Army Secretary Adam Telle set the execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan for 1 p.m. Central on December 3 at Fort Hood, with the Pentagon confirming on Thursday that the firing squad execution will be livestreamed.
- Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, was convicted in 2013 for the November 5, 2009 mass shooting at the Texas base that killed 13 people and wounded 32 others, marking the first U.S. military execution since 1961 and the first by firing squad since 1945.
- Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended the firing squad as a 'no-brainer,' stating the public should witness the execution so "people need to understand that there's serious consequences for these types of things," framing the 2009 attack as a radical Islamist strike.
- For the 13 victims' families and survivors, the approaching execution prompts complex reactions; some plan to attend, while others like Leila Hunt Willingham seek closure through faith rather than witnessing the event.
- Pentagon officials confirmed the livestream will proceed, though specific platform details remain pending, while legal experts warn Hasan could file a habeas petition in civilian court to challenge his sentence, potentially delaying the December 3 execution.
