Family of Teacher Killed During Prank Wants Charges Against Students Dropped
Jason Hughes' family supports dropping charges against teens involved in a prank that led to his death and has raised over $294,000 for the family, officials said.
- On March 6, Jason Hughes, a 40-year-old math teacher and golf coach at North Hall High School, was struck outside his home and later died at a hospital.
- The prank, known locally as rolling, followed a Hall County School District warning that five high school students could face charges for prom-season TP-ing.
- The Hall County Sheriff's Office arrested on Friday and charged Jayden Ryan Wallace with first-degree vehicular homicide and reckless driving; four others face trespass and littering charges and were released on bond on Friday.
- Family members asked that charges be dropped to avoid harming the teens' futures, calling the death a terrible tragedy, while community memorials and an online fundraiser raised more than $200,000 as of Monday.
- A preliminary hearing on April 1 is scheduled as prosecutors and investigators continue to review the incident; Lee Darragh, Hall County District Attorney, said, 'It is much too early in this process. I’ll not be commenting until the closure of the case.
