Uganda opposition leader says wife hospitalised after being choked by soldiers

Soldiers raided Bobi Wine’s home seeking his location, injuring his wife and confiscating items amid disputed election claims and reported detention of 2,000 party supporters.

  • On Jan 24, soldiers in military uniform forcefully entered Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu's Magere residence, partially undressed and choked Barbara Kyagulanyi, who was hospitalized for bruises and anxiety at Nsambya Hospital.
  • Wine has been in hiding since Museveni was declared the winner with 71.6% in the Jan. 15, 2026 election, while Wine's National Unity Platform took 24.7%, results Wine rejects as fake.
  • Dozens of men in military uniform broke doors, beat household staff and a lone guard, seized money, documents and electronics while Barbara Kyagulanyi recorded and posted video on X.
  • Wine's lawyer Robert Amsterdam urged international action as the U.N. voiced concern; Muhoozi Kainerugaba said authorities killed 30 supporters and detained 2,000, while David Lewis Rubongoya said NUP `is under attack`.
  • Rights groups note a pattern of military involvement in politics, accusing President Yoweri Museveni of using the military to maintain power amid a heavy security presence during the campaign and an election marred by internet shutdowns and biometric voter identification machine failures.
