Butterfly-Rail Launches at InnoTrans 2026 to Rethink the Economics of Night Trains
The Butterfly-Rail seat turns premium day seating into sleeper space in seconds, aiming to help operators use rolling stock more efficiently.
At InnoTrans 2026, Butterfly Flexible Seating Solutions launched the latest version of Butterfly-Rail, a convertible 3-in-1 system that transforms two reclining seats into a private lounge, family couch, or lie-flat bed in seconds.
The European Union is targeting a 90% reduction in transport emissions by 2050, placing rail at the center of its mobility strategy; however, high operating costs and low utilization of dedicated sleeper carriages have historically hindered night-train services.
Already NFPA 130 certified, Butterfly-Rail is in commercial use with Canada's Tshiuetin Rail Transportation, the country's first Indigenous-owned railway. The bus version has been sold to operators along the US East Coast.
Testing against EN 45545-HL3 standards is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, supporting deployment in higher-hazard European railway categories and relevant sleeping and couchette applications.
"It needs night trains that make better use of their assets and appeal to passengers," said Lars Rinne, CEO of Butterfly Seating. The system aims to create rail interiors that work harder for operators while improving passenger comfort.
