Butterflies spread wave of light for grieving families in Okanagan
The annual run supports Butterfly Okanagan, which helps parents facing miscarriage, stillbirth and infant loss through remembrance events and peer support.
The fourth annual Okanagan Butterfly Run raised $7,268 on October 3 in Kelowna's city park to support parents navigating child loss.
Following personal loss in 2020, Rachelle Cordes, a committee member, joined the Butterfly Support Network, which provides healing for parents grieving child loss.
Reading from a poem, Butterfly Okanagan chair Nathalie Porter described grief as 'waves' that 'wash in with vigour,' noting the community brings 'light into darkness.'
At Kalamalka Beach in Coldstream, the International Wave of Light ceremony occurs today, October 15, honoring babies who died during pregnancy, childbirth, or infancy.
Cordes attests parents 'do not have to walk that path alone,' emphasizing there is 'power in not walking alone' within the community.
