B.C. votes for mayors and councillors before general election next week
Advance polls in the provincial race have drawn increased turnout in several cities, while local leaders say the overlapping campaigns have caused voter confusion.
On Saturday, British Columbians voted for local representatives on councils, school boards, and regional posts, choosing from 3,500 candidates across the province.
NDP Leader David Eby's decision to call a snap provincial election two years early has been denounced by local and opposition politicians for overlapping with the municipal campaign period.
A resolution from The Union of B.C. Municipalities passed last month urged Eby to avoid calling the provincial vote during the local period, as campaigns reported losing staff to provincial efforts.
Despite voter confusion, municipalities including Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, Kamloops, Surrey, Kelowna, Prince George, Cranbrook, and View Royal reported increased or record-breaking turnout at advance polls.
Advance voting for the British Columbia provincial general election continues through October 21, with the final voting day scheduled for October 24.
