New Brunswick’s Progressive Conservatives set to elect new leader
Mail-in ballots will decide whether former cabinet minister Daniel Allain or rookie MLA Don Monahan leads the party, officials said.
On Saturday, the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick will reveal its new leader at the Fredericton Convention Centre, with results announced around 4:45 p.m. following a mail-in ballot process.
Former premier Blaine Higgs resigned in October 2024 after the Liberals decisively defeated the Tories in a provincial election, triggering the current leadership race that began last year.
Vying for the leadership, former cabinet minister Daniel Allain and rookie MLA Don Monahan represent two distinct visions for the party, with Allain serving as minister of local government from 2020 to 2023.
Mount Allison University political science professor Mario Levesque says the incoming leader must unite a party split between moderate and socially conservative factions, though interim party leader Glen Savoie dismissed concerns about internal divisions.
With the next provincial election scheduled for October 2028, the party aims to refocus its efforts on challenging the governing Liberals under Premier Susan Holt after the leadership transition.
