President Bush Read to These Students on 9/11. Now, They Reflect as Adults
Former students say the classroom visit turned into a defining moment as 16 second-graders learned of the attacks during Bush’s school appearance.
- Nearly 25 years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, former students from Emma E. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida, reflect on the day President George W. Bush visited their classroom, an event that became a defining image of the tragedy.
- Reading in class, the 7-year-olds watched the president's demeanor shift abruptly when White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card whispered news of the attacks into his ear.
- "To us, that day was important to us because we had worked so hard in our reading and learning skills," Natalia Jones-Pinkney said, while classmate Lazaro Dubrocq recalled, "We took our seats, and from then on, the day proceeded as history goes."
- The class and their former teacher share a special bond 25 years later; Jones-Pinkney pursued elementary education, and her son now attends Emma E. Booker Elementary.
- A steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center remains on display at Emma E. Booker Elementary as a memorial, while the nation marks the 25th anniversary of the attacks.
