Bus Sinks in Bangladesh River, Killing at Least 18 People

The bus carrying 40-50 passengers lost control after a small ferry struck the pontoon, killing 24 people and prompting ongoing multi-agency rescue and investigation efforts.

  • On Wednesday, a passenger bus plunged into the Padma River at the Daulatdia ferry terminal in Rajbari, killing 24 people. The vehicle lost control and sank 30 feet while attempting to board a ferry, according to officials.
  • A smaller utility ferry, the Hasna Hena, struck the pontoon with significant force, causing the bus to lose control, eyewitnesses and officials reported. The Dhaka-bound bus, operated by Showhardo Paribahan, submerged around 5:15 pm.
  • Fire Service divers and the Hamza salvage vessel recovered 22 bodies from inside the submerged bus, including 11 women and five children. While 11 passengers managed to swim to safety, rescue operations were hampered by strong currents and rain.
  • Prime Minister Tarique Rahman ordered a formal investigation into the accident and formed a high-level committee to probe the circumstances. Authorities began handing over recovered bodies to grieving families on Thursday as identification and search efforts continued.
  • Officials face growing calls to implement enhanced safety measures and stricter enforcement at ferry terminals nationwide, as this incident exposes recurring vulnerabilities in Bangladesh's transport sector, where poor road maintenance and reckless driving contribute to numerous annual fatalities.
