Bus Driver in I-95 Quintuple Fatal Exits Hospital, Goes to Jail
Authorities say speeding and criminal negligence led to five deaths and dozens of injuries in the multi-vehicle collision.
Bus driver Jing Sheng Dong, 48, of Staten Island, New York, is being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail after being charged with five counts of involuntary manslaughter and one misdemeanor count of reckless driving stemming from a May 29 crash on I-95 in Stafford County.
Virginia State Police reported the E&P Travel bus failed to slow for traffic in a work zone, striking a Chevrolet Suburban and triggering a chain reaction involving seven vehicles on the southbound interstate.
The collision killed Priscilla Mafalda, 25, of Worcester, Massachusetts, and a family of four from Greenfield, Massachusetts: Dmitri Doncev, Ecaterina Doncev, and their children Emily, 13, and Mark, 7.
Dong is scheduled to appear on Wednesday in Stafford County General District Court; Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy noted the driver's New York license and cited language barriers as contributing factors.
Records indicate E&P Travel was involved in a previous collision on Interstate 85 in North Carolina in August 2024, though the company received a "satisfactory" federal safety rating just weeks before the May 29 crash.
