Burkina Faso Pardons 21 Soldiers Involved in Failed 2015 Coup

  • In Burkina Faso, loyalist forces successfully put down a coup attempt within two weeks, resulting in 14 deaths and 270 wounded.
  • The 2015 coup attempt aimed to overthrow the transitional government that was established after former president Blaise Compaoré was ousted in October 2014, following 27 years in power.
  • Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who led the military takeover in September 2022, issued a decree last week pardoning 21 soldiers convicted in 2019 by a military tribunal in Ouagadougou for their involvement in the failed 2015 coup, facing charges like "harming state security," murder, and treason.
  • The decree, announced in December with pardons starting January 1, stipulated that the 21 pardoned soldiers, including six officers and 15 non-commissioned officers and rank-and-file soldiers, would not be eligible for compensation or career progression, while around 1,200 people connected to the coup attempt would be pardoned.
  • While Generals Gilbert Diendéré and Djibril Bassolé , considered masterminds of the coup and sentenced to 20 and 10 years respectively, were not part of the amnesty, those convicted have until June to request a pardon by demonstrating a patriotic commitment and willingness to fight terrorism, with the pardoned soldiers rejoining the army that has been battling Al-Qaeda-linked jihadist groups for over a decade.
