Burglary suspects shoot truck dozens of times after seeing masked mannequin in passenger seat
Police say nearly 20 bullets hit the truck, two other vehicles and a home, but no one was injured.
- On Saturday, the New Orleans Police Department began investigating a shooting in the University section after suspects fired nearly 20 rounds at a parked Toyota pickup near Joseph and Willow streets.
- Startled by a mannequin wearing a Michael Myers mask placed in the passenger seat, suspected burglars opened the truck door and began firing; the victim said, "He jumped backward and started shooting, and then his two friends started shooting as well."
- Nearly 20 bullet holes riddled the truck, while bullets also struck two other vehicles and the victim's home; authorities discovered 9 mm and.40-caliber casings scattered across the street and sidewalk.
- No injuries were reported, but the NOPD reports suspects fled in a silver Nissan Altima; officials urge anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
- Resident Anna Hedstrom called the incident a "scary wake-up call," while the victim said, "Definitely not a good idea in hindsight" regarding his mannequin strategy; both reflect on how the deterrent backfired dangerously.
