Nearly eight times as many fines were imposed on smokers at public transport stops in Budapest in the first half of this year as in the whole of last year. The significant tightening and multiplication of penalties imposed is a direct consequence of the decision of the Budapest City Council in February.
In the first half of 2026, the capital's public space inspectors fined smokers at bus stops in nearly eight times as many cases as in the whole of last year: 578 violators were held accountable, and the total value of the fines imposed exceeded 4.6 million forints.
Last year, the amount of fines imposed barely exceeded 800,000 forints, and this year it is already approaching 5 million.
In Budapest, the anti-smoking policy at public transport stops has been significantly tightened, resulting in a drastic increase in the number and amount of fines imposed on violators in the first half of this year. Following a decision by the Metropolitan Assembly at the end of February, public space inspectors are carrying out increased inspections, especially in busy intersections such as Deák Ferenc Square or Blaha Lujza Square.
