Nearly eight times as many fines were imposed on smokers at public transport stops in Budapest in the first half of this year as in the whole of last year. The significant tightening and multiplication of penalties imposed is a direct consequence of the decision of the Budapest City Council in February.

In the first half of 2026, the capital's public space inspectors fined smokers at bus stops in nearly eight times as many cases as in the whole of last year: 578 violators were held accountable, and the total value of the fines imposed exceeded 4.6 million forints.
