BT Braces for Loss of 800,000 Customers as It Banks on Fibre to Keep Turnaround 'on Track'
Adjusted earnings fell 1% to £2.01 billion as Openreach added 574,000 fibre customers and broadband line losses stayed on track to hit 800,000.
- On Thursday, telecoms giant BT reported adjusted earnings dipped 1% to £2.01 billion for the quarter ending June 30, though bosses hailed a "solid start" to the financial year.
- Pre-Tax profits slipped 4% to £505 million due to higher finance costs, while revenues remained flat at £4.3 billion as cost-cutting gains were offset by lower broadband margins.
- Openreach added 574,000 fibre-to-the-premises customers during the quarter, though overall broadband lines decreased by 192,000 with losses on track to reach 800,000 for the year.
- Allison Kirkby emphasized the company's commitment to digital infrastructure, stating, "No-one is upgrading and investing in the country," while remaining on track to deliver around £2 billion cash flow this year.
- Shares were down 0.5% on Thursday as Duncan Ferris, analyst at Freetrade, noted that expanding the fibre network enables better monetization through faster packages and recurring wholesale income.
