- Since May 20, federal officers have arrested immigrants after hearings in hallway stations, though the cells were meant for brief holding, arrests scaled up this May causing overcrowding.
- Two videos from last week show men sprawled on cement floors with thin thermal blankets, footage also reveals minimally partitioned toilets, and detainees said they lacked food, showers and medical care.
- In response, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the site is a processing center not a detention facility, and US Rep. Adriano Espaillat called the conditions a “blatant violation of human rights and due process.”
- Civic groups and legislators are demanding congressional oversight and basic detainee rights, while US Rep. Nydia Velazquez highlighted that ICE labels the site a 'processing center' to block oversight.
