"Thought He'd Be the Perfect Fit" - Manchester United Captain Bruno Fernandes Admits He's Disappointed Arsenal Star Didn't Join Red Devils
Fernandes said Rice would have strengthened United’s midfield and called the Arsenal star a perfect fit after the club missed out on him in 2023.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes admitted he was "really sad" Declan Rice chose to join Arsenal, stating he always believed the midfielder would be a "perfect fit" for United.
Rice completed his move to Arsenal from West Ham in 2023 for an initial £100m, rising by a further £5m in add-ons, making him the most expensive English player of 2023.
The pair developed mutual respect after training together three years ago in the Algarve, with Fernandes describing Rice as a "professional" whose personality impressed him during the summer camp.
Last week, Fernandes won the Football Writers' Association men's Footballer of the Year award, edging out Rice by 28 votes, though Fernandes insisted the Arsenal midfielder would have been a worthy winner.
Regarding their different roles, Fernandes noted Rice plays deeper and "doesn't need to score as much," yet remains one of the Premier League's standout players this season.
