Bruins Give Don Sweeney Two-Year Extension
On Tuesday morning, the Boston Bruins announced they have extended Don Sweeney's tenure as general manager with a new contract lasting two additional years, keeping him under agreement through the 2027-28 season.
This extension comes after a challenging 2024-25 season in which the Bruins finished at the bottom of the Atlantic Division and failed to qualify for the playoffs, ending a postseason streak that had lasted nearly a decade.
Sweeney has managed the Bruins since 2015, leading them to eight playoff appearances, including the 2019 Stanley Cup Final, but faced challenges such as firing coach Jim Montgomery and a trade deadline roster sell-off last season.
Bruins president Cam Neely commended Sweeney for steering the team through challenging times with determination, focus, and a strategic outlook aimed at shaping the Boston Bruins' long-term success. Meanwhile, Sweeney expressed gratitude for the confidence shown by ownership and recognized the privilege of leading an organization rich in tradition and supported by devoted fans.
Sweeney’s immediate priorities include hiring a new head coach, retooling the roster, preparing for the NHL Draft and free agency, and aiming to rebuild the team to return the Bruins to Stanley Cup contention.
