Brooklyn mom who drowned 3 kids on Coney Island beach sentenced to 20 years to life
Erin Merdy pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder after bringing the children to the beach, prosecutors said.
On Wednesday, a Brooklyn judge sentenced Erin Merdy to 20 years to life in prison for drowning her three young children near the Coney Island boardwalk.
Merdy pleaded guilty earlier this year to first-degree murder charges in the 2022 deaths of her seven-year-old son Zachary, four-year-old daughter Liliana, and three-month-old son Oliver.
New York City police initiated a search on Sept. 12, 2022, after relatives expressed concern, locating Merdy barefoot and soaking wet 3 kilometers from where she lived.
The city medical examiner ruled the deaths homicides by drowning. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez stated the children's lives were taken "in the most heartbreaking and unthinkable way."
Evidence included video of Merdy walking toward the Atlantic Ocean with her children before 1 a.m., while relatives previously noted she may have been experiencing postpartum depression.
A New York woman was sentenced Wednesday to 20 years to life in prison for drowning her three young children in the ocean and leaving their wet, sand-covered bodies in the water.
