Brooklyn cafe rejects payment from Rep. Goldman, says it doesn’t serve ‘genocide enablers’
The Civil Rights Division says the cafe’s refusal and online post may violate federal anti-discrimination law.
- On Sunday, Poetica Coffee in Williamsburg refunded U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman's $9.82 purchase and posted online that the cafe does not serve "genocide enablers," banning the congressman from returning.
- The shop, owned by Parviz Mukhamadkulov, targeted Goldman for his support of Israel amid his primary campaign against former city Comptroller Brad Lander, alleging his funds were "probably coming from AIPAC."
- Goldman, visiting with his 7-year-old daughter, responded that the barista was kind and that he purchased the coffee to repay her for allowing his child to use the restroom.
- Following online backlash, Poetica Coffee deactivated its social media account while the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division opened an investigation into whether the cafe violated public accommodation laws.
- Federal law prohibits businesses from discriminating based on religion or national origin. Harmeet Dhillon, the DOJ's assistant attorney general for civil rights, said the department will bring enforcement action if warranted.
