Second Ever Red Heat Warning Comes Into Force
Temperatures could reach 40C, prompting school closures, transport cancellations and health warnings as officials warn of risks to power, water and public safety.
Effective from 9am Wednesday until 9pm Thursday, the Met Office issued a rare red weather warning for extreme heat across parts of England and Wales, with temperatures forecast to reach up to 40C.
A heat-dome settling over western Europe has brought extreme conditions, prompting the UK Health Security Agency to issue red and amber alerts warning that "adverse temperatures are likely to impact on the health."
100 schools in Somerset and Buckinghamshire, alongside 86 schools in Gloucestershire, are closing or operating partially, while transport operators including Avanti West Coast and Chiltern Railways cancelled or reduced services, urging the public to "prepare for a disrupted journey."
London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan triggered a high air pollution alert, while the Army cancelled ceremonial operations in London and Windsor, and the London Fire Brigade urged residents to avoid disposable barbecues as "heat can be retained."
The UKHSA said "severe" impacts and an "increased risk to life" are expected until 11pm Thursday, while also cautioning about increased water safety incidents as people head to coastal areas, lakes, and rivers to cool off.
