- California authorities charged 44-year-old pop star Britney Spears on Thursday with a single misdemeanor count of driving under the combined influence of alcohol and at least one drug, the Ventura County District Attorney said.
- The California Highway Patrol arrested Spears after pulling over her BMW for erratic driving on U.S. 101 near her home; she appeared impaired and was released from Ventura County jail on bail the following day.
- Following her arrest, Spears voluntarily entered a substance abuse treatment facility, her representative said. She will not be required to appear in court for her arraignment, as it is a misdemeanor.
- A representative called Spears' actions "completely inexcusable," saying it should be "the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney's life."
- The former Mickey Mouse Club star has essentially retired from music in recent years, releasing only a few collaborative singles since her last full album in 2016, according to The Associated Press.
