British father fined for causing death of his two-year-old son in Cyprus
Foster admitted causing death through a reckless act after placing his son on a windowsill, and the court said imprisonment was not warranted.
On Friday, October 16, 2026, a Cypriot court fined Joshua Foster, a 37-year-old auditor from Essex, €3,000 after he admitted causing his son's death through a reckless, rash, or dangerous act.
During the family holiday at the King Evelthon Beach Hotel in Chlorakas, Cyprus, on July 12, 2026, Foster placed his son on a fourth-floor windowsill to view a waterpark, mistakenly believing the window was closed.
Described in court, the window measured 2.85 metres wide and 1.2 metres high; the boy fell nearly 40 feet and was later pronounced dead at Paphos General Hospital.
Lawyer Alexandros Alexandrou told the Paphos District Court that Foster had no previous convictions and was held in custody for eight days, saying his life "changed forever."
A blood sample showed an estimated alcohol concentration of 124mg, though the defense argued there was no evidence of intoxication; Prosecutor Chryso Pergandi presented the case during the 25-minute hearing.
A 37-year-old British was fined €3,000 (R$17,000) by the Cyprus Justice after admitting responsibility for the death of the son, who fell out of a hotel window during the family vacation. According to investigations, Joshua Foster put the child on the parapet to show the view of a water park and lost control of the boy, who fell from a height of about 12 meters.
