On Monday, Brendan Gallagher confirmed he will leave the Montreal Canadiens after 14 seasons in the NHL, stating his opportunities with the organization have come to an end.
The 34-year-old Edmonton native saw his role diminish on a young, rising team, with ice time dropping to a career-low 12 minutes 21 seconds across 77 games this season.
A gritty, heart-and-soul player, Gallagher appeared in 911 regular-season games and 79 playoff contests, entering the off-season with one year remaining on his contract at US$6.5 million.
During an emotional locker clean-out, Gallagher broke down reflecting on his tenure and the support teammates provided when his mother, Della Gallagher, died last year.
Not ready to retire, Gallagher plans to continue his career elsewhere, stating "There's more in the tank" as he prepares to "find a new home.
