BREAKING: It's official - Cobblers have new owners as SAC complete takeover

The club will remain debt-free as existing owners keep 30% and new co-chairmen João Xavier and Tim Chamberlain join the board.

  • On Wednesday, investment group Sports Alpha Capital completed its takeover of Northampton Town, acquiring a 70% shareholding in the League Two club. Founders Joao Xavier, Tim Chamberlain, and former Brazil striker Alexandre Pato lead the new consortium.
  • Having announced a pre-tax loss of just under £3m in April 2026, the club enters this new chapter debt-free. Founders Xavier and Chamberlain stated they are "extremely proud to become custodians" of the historic football club.
  • Retaining a 30% stake, existing owners Kelvin Thomas, David Bower, and Nigel Le Quesne remain involved, while Thomas steps down as chairman after more than ten years. Xavier and Chamberlain will serve as the new co-chairmen.
  • CEO James Whiting and supporters' representative Tom Cliffe will remain on the board to ensure continuity. Additionally, Pato is set to join the board as a director, bringing professional football experience to the new ownership group.
  • Earlier this year, SAC attempted to purchase Colchester United, but negotiations did not conclude. Colchester chairman Robbie Cowling previously confirmed the consortium's bid exceeded his initial expectations, yet they ultimately decided against the acquisition.
