2027: INEC Announces Extension of Continuous Voter Registration

The commission said the new portal will let first-time voters complete biometric registration on personal devices without visiting an INEC office.

  • National Commissioner Mohammed Kudu Haruna announced on Friday that the Independent National Electoral Commission extended the Continuous Voter Registration exercise by two weeks, moving the deadline to July 24th.
  • Following a review of the exercise and feedback from state offices, political parties, and civil society organisations, the Commission determined that eligible Nigerians needed additional time to register before the 2027 election.
  • Starting Wednesday, July 8th, the Commission will launch a self-service online registration platform for first-time voters, allowing them to complete registration, including biometric capture, using personal devices without visiting an INEC office.
  • The electoral body designed the system with "robust identity verification, biometric validation, and backend integrity checks" to safeguard the national register of voters, while a step-by-step guide is available on the dedicated CVR portal.
  • INEC urges eligible Nigerians yet to register to use the additional two-week window and embrace the new digital option, advancing the use of technology to improve citizens' experience in the electoral process.
