Brazil’s Police Formally Accuses 16 People for Voepass Spiral Plane Crash that Killed 62 in 2024
Federal police say the aircraft was cleared into severe icing conditions despite de-icing failures on three prior flights that day.
- On Thursday, Brazil's federal police formally accused 16 current and former Voepass employees in the Aug. 9, 2024, plane crash that killed all 62 people on board, concluding a two-year investigation.
- Data recorders revealed the de-icing system repeatedly failed or was manually cycled during 136 flights before the crash, as investigators determined improper maintenance and deliberate omissions directly contributed to the fatal accident.
- Federal police investigator André Ribeiro stated the ATR 72-500 was irregularly cleared for departure into known severe icing conditions despite experiencing de-icing failures on three prior flights that same day, plummeting 13,000 feet.
- Voepass owner José Luiz Felicio Filho was among those accused, while 15 other employees face charges for endangering air traffic safety with potential prison sentences of up to 12 years.
- "This is a watershed in air crash disasters here," said Ribeiro, who suggested prosecutors investigate potential accusations against Brazil's aviation agency ANAC as local prosecutors decide whether to formally charge the accused.
