Brazil’s lower house removes Bolsonaro’s son and former intelligence agency head from their seats
Eduardo Bolsonaro was removed for missing over 80% of sessions and alleged interference; Alexandre Ramagem was ousted following a Supreme Court order after fleeing jail.
- Hugo Motta announced on Thursday that he had removed Eduardo Bolsonaro, lawmaker and son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, and Alexandre Ramagem, former head of Brazil's intelligence agency, publishing the decision in Brazil's lower house journal.
- Ramagem's removal stemmed from a Supreme Court order after he fled to the U.S. to avoid a 16-year jail sentence, and Eduardo Bolsonaro missed over 80% of this year's sessions after moving to Texas.
- If Eduardo returns to Brazil he will face trial on obstructing-justice charges in connection with the attempted coup case, and Brazilian prosecutors say a conviction could bring a prison term range of one to four years and a fine.
- Earlier this month, Motta — who has often sided with Bolsonaro allies — said he would put Ramagem's removal to a full-house vote, and neither Eduardo Bolsonaro nor Alexandre Ramagem made comments about losing their seats.
- In Washington, his efforts included claims he influenced U.S. President Donald Trump’s July 50% tariff hike on Brazilian imports, later partly revoked after talks with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
