Brazilian judge issues arrest warrant for Eduardo Bolsonaro, brother of a presidential candidate
The ruling adds an arrest warrant, passport cancellation and a 4-year, 2-month term after his appeal was rejected.
On Thursday, October 8, 2026, Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered Eduardo Bolsonaro to immediately begin serving his four years and two months prison sentence, canceling his Brazilian passport.
The conviction stems from Eduardo Bolsonaro's efforts to lobby the Trump administration for sanctions against Brazilian government members, becoming final on October 3, 2026, following a June 2026 ruling.
Currently residing in the United States as a green card holder, Eduardo Bolsonaro faces a fine of roughly US$32,000 and an eight-year ban from public office. He maintains he is a victim of political persecution.
Moraes issued an arrest warrant and entered the defendant into the National Imprisonment Monitoring Bank, instructing Federal Police to detain him should he return to Brazil.
This decision arrives less than three weeks before the presidential runoff between incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro, as Justice Moraes previously led the investigation resulting in former President Jair Bolsonaro's 27-year prison sentence.
He was sentenced last June to four years in prison for making representations to the Trump administration against the Lula da Silva administration. The brother of the former president and presidential candidate has been living in Texas since 2025.If he returns to Brazil, he runs the risk of being arrested immediately.
Eduardo Bolsonaro, sentenced to four years in prison for pressuring the Trump administration to impose sanctions against Brazil, resides in Texas and is a key link between his family and the White House.
