After 2 Student Deaths, Minnesota Superintendent Vows Change
Rankin said more than 30 professionals are coordinating support, with counselors, hotline numbers and employee assistance now available.
Brainerd Public Schools Superintendent Chip Rankin addressed the community on Monday, July 13, regarding the recent deaths of two Forestview Middle School students, asking for compassion and privacy for the affected families.
On Monday morning, more than 30 professionals, including counselors and regional mental health partners, gathered at Forestview to build a coordinated support plan for students, staff and families.
Counselors are available at Forestview from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Thursday, while the district provides the 988 suicide hotline and Northern Pines 24-hour crisis line at 218-828-4357.
Rankin, a father of three daughters in the district, vowed to address gaps in mental health support, stating, "This is not just something that is a job." Board members expressed commitment to student safety.
The district will focus on closing gaps in staffing, training and programming to support student wellbeing. Rankin stated, "Our people will return better prepared and better supported than ever to care for our kids.
