Government Announces New Rail Station for Bradford - on Site of City's Interchange
The station will replace the outdated 1970s layout and is expected to support 5,000 new homes, 23,000 jobs and up to £1 billion in benefits.
On Tuesday, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander confirmed the new railway station will be built at Bradford Interchange as part of the Northern Powerhouse Rail project to transform transport links across the North.
The Department for Transport selected the Interchange to replace the outdated 1970s station and unlock regeneration of the 126ha Southern Gateway area. Alexander noted the government aimed to avoid previous infrastructure delivery mistakes.
Bradford City Council analysis indicates the project, alongside the proposed West Yorkshire Mass Transit Network, will support 5,000 new homes, 23,000 new jobs, and up to £1 billion in economic benefits.
West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin described the announcement as an "ironclad commitment to a new station in the city centre," while Reform UK leader Stephen Place called it "a major milestone for Bradford and the North."
Expected to open in the 2030s, the facility will join Great British Railways. Engineering studies will determine whether it operates as a through station or turnback station, finalizing the design scope.
