Hydroponic leek cultivation is now being implemented on a large scale in Ypres. This type of leek is grown not in soil, but in a basin containing circulating nutrient solution. The new technique produces uniform stems, prevents fertilizer from leaking into the environment, and takes up approximately six times less space than traditional open-field cultivation.
