Man ICE Calls 'MS-13 Kingpin’ Admits Illegally Entering US. Caught During Traffic Stop.
OMAHA, NEBRASKA AND COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA, JUL 14 – Melvin Alejandro Varela Perez, linked to multiple homicides and terrorism, was paroled into the U.S. in 2023 despite criminal charges, highlighting alleged border vetting failures, ICE said.
Melvin Alejandro Varela Perez, a 50-year-old alleged MS-13 kingpin, was arrested last week in Council Bluffs, Iowa, during an ICE operation.
Perez entered the United States illegally in 2016, admitted gang membership at a Texas Border Patrol checkpoint, and was previously paroled into the U.S. in 2023.
His arrest came after a Douglas County traffic stop prompted by intelligence from the Nebraska Information Analysis Center concerning an individual involved in criminal activities residing unlawfully in Omaha.
An ICE official called Perez an MS-13 kingpin and confirmed he faces multiple aggravated homicide and terrorist affiliation charges in El Salvador.
Perez is detained at a correctional facility in Hardin County, Iowa, while ICE collaborates with Salvadoran officials to arrange his deportation, highlighting the complexities of immigration enforcement.
