Marjo Niemi's novel Small Budget War Film begins with a grandiose description of a firefight, like the most important Finnish war novel, The Unknown Soldier (1954). This is how a proper war novel should begin, although now, as “someone” gets off the bus, he sees “an asphalt patch with a metal rod hammered into it, with a picture of a bus sticking out of it”.
