One man was arrested after suspicious items prompted evacuations of homes on four streets and deployment of a bomb disposal team, police said.

  • Kent Police were alerted at about 16:00 BST on Wednesday to suspicious items in a flat on Rosedale Road, Margate, prompting evacuation of residents on four streets as a precaution.

  • Homes were cleared on Glencoe Road, Wharfedale Road and Malham Drive, and Thanet District Council set up Hartsdown Leisure Centre as an evacuation point while resident Liam John, 28, said, `I think everyone just shocked that there were loads of police and a bomb squad.`
  • Police said the arrested individual is being held while inquiries continue, with residents evacuated from four roads and the force promising to contact them when it is safe to return.
  • Officials said they will share further updates soon as dozens of families were evacuated and emergency services and local teams remain on site and at Hartsdown Leisure Centre supporting residents.
