Body of IDF soldier Itay Chen, killed fighting Hamas on Oct. 7, returned to Israel

Itay Chen, the last U.S. citizen held by Hamas, was killed during the October 7, 2023 attack and his body was returned after more than two years of captivity.

  • On Monday, the Israel Defense Forces confirmed the body of Staff Sergeant Itay Chen, a 19-year-old dual U.S.-Israeli citizen, was returned from Gaza for burial after identification by the National Institute of Forensic Medicine, Israel Police, and Military Rabbinate.
  • During the October 7, 2023 assault, Itay Chen was killed near Kibbutz Nir Oz after his tank was struck amid around 500 Hamas militants storming the area.
  • His death was officially confirmed on March 10, 2024, after nearly 700 days in Gaza; Itay Chen was the middle of three brothers.
  • A funeral will take place this week with full military honors for Chen, and the Prime Minister's Office said the Government of Israel shares in the Chen family's sorrow and that of all families of fallen hostages.
  • The IDF and Shin Bet announced Tuesday that a body was transferred to the Red Cross in northern Gaza, while seven more hostages' bodies remain and Hamas conducts searches with Red Cross teams.
