Body camera video shows deputy preventing tragedy during mental health crisis | News Channel 3-12

Last week in Saginaw County, Deputy Cameron Helwer encountered a dangerous situation when a man attempted to seize his weapon while responding to a mental health-related incident on Hospital Road.
The dangerous confrontation occurred after a 9-1-1 call about a man walking away from an ambulance and escalating when he lunged for the deputy's weapon.
Body camera footage showed Helwer struggling with the man until backup arrived, at which point the individual followed commands to lie down.
Helwer suffered minor injuries that caused him to miss a day of work, and according to Undersheriff Mike Gomez, the man threatened to seize Helwer’s firearm and challenged him to kill him before attempting to take the weapon.
Gomez praised Helwer’s calm and trained response amid rising encounters with people facing mental health issues among deputies nationwide.
