Luge officials predict 2026 Olympic sliding races will be in Italy, a good sign for Milan-Cortina
- The International Bobsled and Skeleton Federation declared the pre-homologation testing period at the Cortina d'Ampezzo track successful, with about 60 sliders from 12 countries, half of whom were Italian, participating in the event this week.
- Simico, the Italian government agency managing the 118 million euro project, aims to have the facility, which still needs a roof and event-support buildings, handed over to Milan-Cortina organizers by November 5.
- The Cortina track, measuring 1.749 kilometers with 16 curves and an estimated top speed of 145 kph with run times of 55-60 seconds, is undergoing minor adaptions to finalize construction.
- IBSF President Ivo Ferriani stated that feedback from technical experts, coaches, and athletes on site has been very positive, but minor adaptions are still needed and the main focus must remain on the finalization of the construction works.
- Preliminary certification from the IBSF and International Luge Federation for the Cortina track would be a significant step in avoiding the IOC's demanded Plan B, which involves moving the sliding sports to Lake Placid if the track isn't ready, with luge athletes scheduled for training from Oct. 27-Nov. 2 and bobsled/skeleton athletes from Nov. 7-16, followed by World Cup races from Nov. 17-23.
