Blast of winter weather hits Midwest and East Coast and could bring snow to Florida

Snow squalls caused major crashes and grounded flights with gusts up to 60 mph, while temperatures are forecasted 15 to 30 degrees below normal, NWS said.

  • The National Weather Service reported widespread snow across the Midwest and East Coast and near-freezing temperatures in parts of the South, including Florida.
  • The Weather Prediction Center said `The next few nights are forecast to be very cold for much of the Central and Eastern United States,` with below-average temperatures predicted for the weekend and into early next week.
  • Expect visibilities of less than a quarter of a mile and rapid snow accumulation on roadways as snow squalls moved into the Cleveland metropolitan area, tracking east into Pennsylvania and eastern New York.
  • The National Weather Service warned travel would be difficult and possibly dangerous, with slippery roads expected during the snow and as remaining water refreezes Sunday night into Monday morning.
