US Government Says BlackSuit and Royal Ransomware Gangs Hit Hundreds of Major Firms Before Shutdown
UNITED STATES, AUG 7 – The Russian ransomware groups extorted over $370 million from 450 U.S. victims in sectors like healthcare and energy before a coordinated global law enforcement takedown last month.
Under ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations, last month officials seized servers, domains and digital assets from BlackSuit, which compromised over 450 U.S. victims and collected more than $370 million.
The group rebranded through Zeon, Black Basta and Quantum before adopting the BlackSuit name, emerging from the Conti ransomware syndicate after a 2022 leak.
According to Homeland Security Investigations, BlackSuit and Royal ransomware groups targeted healthcare, education, public safety, energy, and government sectors using double-extortion tactics.
U.S. Secret Service Criminal Investigative Division Special Agent in Charge William Mancino said the takedown seized servers, domains and digital assets, delivering a critical blow to BlackSuit’s infrastructure and operations.
Despite this success, impact may be limited as BlackSuit associates had dispersed and abandoned the BlackSuit brand before the takedown, according to experts.
