Binance hackers used fake job interview to compromise computer before $6.3 billion attack
Binance reported hackers stole $6.3 billion in what could be the largest-ever financial heist. Attackers compromised internal systems to seize control of the crypto exchange's digital wallets on October 29.
The sophisticated operation began in June when a wallet developer downloaded a tampered AI-enabled tool. Attackers later targeted a second engineer using a "malicious code repository" disguised as a legitimate job opportunity.
On October 20, attackers used compromised devices to gain control of wallet developer systems; the theft followed nine days later. The FBI has blamed a North Korean hacking group for the attack, a claim North Korea has rejected.
Binance committed to repaying all affected customers. Co-Chief Executive Officer Richard Teng apologized, stating, "This should not have happened, and we apologize for the concern, disruption and uncertainty it caused our users, partners and the wider industry."
The exchange is now increasing investment in AI-enabled detection to prevent future breaches. Binance is also establishing a security research fund and launching targeted initiatives with leading technological companies.
