FBI says North Korea behind $6 billion crypto theft from Binance
The bureau said the stolen funds are being converted into Ethereum and laundered through decentralized finance and instant-swap services.
- On October 31, the Federal Bureau of Investigation attributed the theft of approximately $6.3 billion from Binance to North Korea's TraderTraitor hacking group, with the breach occurring on or around October 29.
- Binance identified a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop as the initial breach point, which allowed attackers to access a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions.
- The FBI published 628 cryptocurrency addresses—608 Ethereum, 19 Bitcoin, and one Solana address—and requested that virtual asset service providers block transactions linked to these accounts.
- Cooperation with law enforcement has resulted in around $3 billion being frozen through partnerships with token issuers and industry players, though Binance cautioned that frozen assets are not yet recovered.
- Analysts say Pyongyang uses illicit cyber activity to fund weapons development at "minimal cost," laundering stolen funds through mixing services and private exchanges to bypass financial restrictions.
