Trump administration will bypass environmental laws for border project in Big Bend National Park
Officials say 17 miles of low-profile barriers, patrol roads and sensors will replace a traditional wall in rugged park terrain.
On Monday, the Trump administration waived federal environmental laws to authorize 17 miles of vehicle barriers and patrol roads in Big Bend National Park, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
Customs and Border Protection previously indicated no plans for 30-foot walls, yet the agency's 'Big Bend 4' project now includes metal posts and surveillance technology to secure the rugged terrain.
Targeting over 100 miles of border, the new regulatory waiver allows for infrastructure consisting of four-foot tall metal posts with cross beams, according to CBP.
In a 26-34 vote, the House Appropriations Committee rejected an amendment from Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, that would have blocked funding for the construction.
Opponents, including the Center for Biological Diversity, promise to fight the project in court, warning that the construction threatens the landscape and calling the waiver a "death warrant".
