DHS Watchdog Finds Errors in 40% of Sampled Afghan Asylum Files

- Analysis identified 303 missed aliases, 45 unresolved records, 23 missing security checks, and 115 other documentation issues; two cases involved potential Terrorism-Related Inadmissibility Grounds violations.
- Calling the program "dangerously mismanaged," DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated it disregarded proper asylum procedures and warned that "even one dangerous criminal or terrorist slips through and enters our country, it endangers countless American lives."
- USCIS Director Joseph B. Edlow argued existing safeguards minimize these errors, though senior researcher Nayla Rush of the Center for Immigration Studies claimed many admitted Afghans were not "persecuted" individuals or U.S. allies.
