Beyond Monet, Beyond Van Gogh offers one-two punch of immersive art for Nanaimo
The immersive double exhibition uses 360-degree projections and music to recreate works by Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet.
- Beyond Monet and Beyond Van Gogh are on display at Vancouver Island Conference Centre in Nanaimo through Aug. 29, immersing guests in 19th-century painters Vincent and Claude Monet through animated, music-set screens.
- After viewing the exhibition in Florida, David Warburton, Port Theatre artistic executive director, assembled a group to explore feasibility; collaboration between Port Theatre, Nanaimo Museum, Tourism Nanaimo, and City of Nanaimo made the double feature possible.
- Warburton describes the Dutch painter Gogh's life as a "tragic, but beautiful story," while noting Monet's Water Lilies reflects making "your small corner of the world, the centre of your world."
- Leonard Krog, City of Nanaimo mayor, called the exhibitions a "testimony to the value of teamwork," noting they provide inspiring experiences during a typically slow season for the conference centre.
- The exhibition marks the "biggest thing that's ever happened in Nanaimo" for large-scale events, welcoming families and first-time gallery visitors to experience profound art history locally.
