At least 11 dead and multiple injured after MD-11 crash prompts emergency declaration; over 200 responders and 50 trucks engaged, state relief fund established.
- On Tuesday, UPS 2976, an MD-11 freight plane headed to Honolulu, crashed shortly after takeoff at 5:15 p.m. from Muhammad Ali International Airport, striking Kentucky Petroleum Recycling and Grade A Auto Parts.
- The Atlanta-based carrier said UPS 2976 was bound for Honolulu on Tuesday when fire erupted as it sped down the runway, and the MD-11 went down around 5:15 p.m., sending smoke across Louisville.
- UofL Health said hospital systems were treating 15 patients after the crash; 13 were discharged and two remain critical at the University of Louisville Hospital burn center.
- Beshear amended the Team Kentucky Storm Relief Fund and set up a new donation fund to cover funeral expenses and aid recovery, while advising residents near the crash site to avoid drinking the water as a precaution.
- As recovery entered night two, families remained at the scene awaiting news, with more than 50 trucks and over 200 first responders on site and 16 families reporting loved ones unaccounted at the reunification center.
