'Burnt Out' Stokes Leaves England Facing Tricky Questions
Stokes said burnout and a return to county cricket drove his decision after 15 years in England colors.
On Sunday, England Test captain Ben Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket at Trent Bridge during the series decider against New Zealand, ending a 15-year career.
Stokes explained he felt "burnt out" after four and a half years as captain, admitting he was "unable to connect with his love of the game."
Following the announcement, Stokes took a wicket with his first delivery and later promoted himself to open the batting, scoring 30 runs off 20 balls with two sixes.
England finished Sunday at 103-4, facing a 2-1 series loss to New Zealand after suffering a 253-run defeat in the previous match at The Oval.
Stokes intends to continue playing for county side Durham, concluding an international career spanning 15 years with 279 caps and two World Cup wins.
Ben Stokes believes that retiring at the right time was essential to maintaining his love for cricket. According to Stokes, he didn't make this decision out of compulsion. Stokes represented England in 122 Tests, 114 ODIs, and 43 T20 Internationals.
