After Carlos Alcaraz Shock, Ben Shelton Followed Rafael Nadal’s Advice: The Blueprint Behind US Open Final Run
Shelton beat Frances Tiafoe in four sets and became the first Black U.S. men’s singles player in the title match since Arthur Ashe in 1972.
On Friday, Sept. 11, Ben Shelton defeated Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, securing his first-ever Grand Slam final appearance at the Open.
Shelton's victory marks the first time since Arthur Ashe in 1972 that a Black player from The United States has reached the Open's title match, an achievement Shelton said his parents "have sacrificed a lot" for.
Shelton dominated the middle sets with 25 winners, hitting first serves at 75% efficiency and converting 76.7% of those points into winners against Tiafoe's second serve.
Zverev advanced to his second Open final by defeating Russian Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-6 , 7-6 on Sept. 11, setting up a championship match with Shelton on Sept. 13.
Despite losing all five prior meetings with Zverev over a 16-month period in 2024 and 2025, Shelton said he is "more mature, more focused" and fully committed to winning his first major title.
